For an extra 10 minutes sleep? Because we ran out of time? Because we don't feel like it?
Upon waking, our bodies have been in a fasted state for 8-12 hours or even longer, depending on when you last ate. That's where its name comes from; to break the fast! Without any food to fuel our bodies, the body is forced to use stored energy instead, meaning we are now running on an empty tank! This obviously can impact drastically on your energy, mood and the delicate balance between feeling fine and feeling a little 'off'.
So as we can see above, one of the main functions of breakfast is to provide energy, but it has many other uses too. Breakfast foods are a fantastic source of important nutrients such as calcium, iron, B vitamins, proteins and fiber. It also assists in restoring glucose levels, essential for the brain to function. Without this essential carbohydrate, the body begins to shut down, making you feel lethargic, forgetful, and lose concentration.
Many people think that by skipping breakfast, their waistline will improve. This is wrong. Skipping breakfast leads to a state of starvation, whereby the body begins to worry it will never receive food again so stores fat for fuel instead. Without breakfast you are also more likely to snack at irregular times during the day, grabbing a 'quick fix' that might not necessarily be the best in nutritional value.
But lets not be fooled. Not all breakfast foods were made equal, with many being nothing more than a dressed up dessert, full of artificial sugars and little to no nutritional value. I won't name names. You know who you are...
